Student Civic Leadership

Minneapolis Community & Technical CollegeBipartisan Policy Center

The Jefferson Center is partnering with Professor Lena Jones at the Minneapolis Community & Technical College to support student-led community engagement in Minneapolis. This ongoing project is intended to build the civic leadership skills of students and increase political participation among MCTC students and their communities.

This project includes students in disciplines as diverse as health, community development, public safety, political science, and more. With support from the Jefferson Center, students will enhance their facilitation, project management, public policy research, civic engagement, and leadership skills through classroom work, event planning, and deliberation. Each semester, student learning culminates in student-run community-based projects.

In Fall 2014, we focused on engaging students in the electoral process. See our recap of the student-run candidate forum on the Secretary of State election.

We are grateful for support and guidance from outgoing Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie and John Fortier from the Bipartisan Policy Center Democracy Project.

We are actively seeking participation from students and faculty at other colleges in the Twin Cities Metro. If you are interested in learning more about this program, reach out to us by phone or email.
